петь - means to do or make something
perfective form is спеть


Like all verbs петь changes by person in the present tense

Я пою
Вы поёте

Past tense forms change by gender:

пел, пела, пели

Future tense forms:
буду петь (compound), спою (simple formed with perfective form)

Imperative forms:
Пой! Пойте! / Не пой! Не пойте!

Споём! - Let's sing!
Запевай! - Start singing!

запевать запеть to start singing, to be the first one to sing

So who is going to sing first?

перепевать перепеть
  1. to sing another author's song
  2. to outsing somebody

Он перепел песню Высотского.

He has redone a Vysotsky song.

Я вас всех перепел.

I have outsung you all.

подпевать подпеть to sing along

Ты будешь подпевать?

Will you sing along?

Ты начинай , а я подпою.

You go ahead & I'll sing along.

спеться to become good friends , to hit it off

Они быстро спелись!

They have hit it off.

Не машина (работа, обед etc), а песня!  It's not a car it's a song ! (when praising something)

This is an incredibly helpful site. Thanks for all the work you put in. I particularly like the word of the day. But if I may make a comment, I think it would be helpful if you would list the conjugation of verbs in the standard order - that is: singular - first person, second person, third person followed by plural - first person, second person, third person.
