Prepositions are words that together with grammatical cases of nouns, pronouns,and numerals help to express relationships between different words: сидеть за столом - sit at a table, прилететь в Анапу - to arrive to Anapa city, подъехать к офису - to stop by the office.

Prepositions are not independent parts of speech, rather they belong to the words they're used in the sentence. Most prepositions are typical of certain cases: Я буду скучать по тебе (I'll be missing you) - Dative case, Я пошёл с ним (I went with him) - Instrumental case etc.

Structure-wise, there are simple , complex and compound prepositions:

Different types of prepositions according to the meaning:

• Space-related:

перед - in front of (Я стою перед школой - I'm standing in front of the school)

над- above, over (Самолёт летит над городом - The plane is flying over the city)

возле - near (Он живет возле моста - He lives near the bridge)

вокруг - around (Они бегают вокруг стадиона - They are running around the stadium)

между - between (Дом находится между двух зданий - The house is situated between two buildings)

вдоль - along (Давай прогуляемся вдоль реки - Let's walk along the river)

поперёк - across ( реж вдоль, а не поперёк - Cut lenthwise not widthwise)

из-за - behind (Из-за забора вышел мужик - From behind the fence a man came out)

на - on (Я положил его на стол - I put in on the table)

в - in (Я вошел в зал - I came into the hall)

к - to, toward (Подойди к нам - Come to us)

у - at, by (Мы договорились встретиться у метро - We agreed to meet at the subway station)

через - across, through (Он переплыл через реку - He swam across the river)

около - next to, near (Мы встретились около железнодорожной станции станции - We met by the railroad station)

• Time-related:

после - after, afterwards (После занятий мы пойдём играть в теннис - After the lessons we'll go play tennis)

перед - before (Хорошо поешь перед поездкой - Eat well before going on a trip)

в течение - during, for a duration of, for (В течение семи лет он занимался преподаванием - For 7 years he had been teaching)

с - from (Он работает с 9ти утра - He starts working from 9 am)

в - at (Он будет дома в 9 - He'll be home at 9)

к - by, at (Они будут готовы к 10 - They'll be ready by 10)

до - until, till (Она работает до 6 - She works until 6)

через - in (Кто приедет через неделю? - Who will come in a week?)

по - untill, till (С понедельника по пятницу все люди ходят на работу - From Monday till Friday all people go to work )

• Cause-realted:

ради - for, because of (Я купил дом ради своей семьи - I bought a house for the family (for the wellbeing of my family))

благодаря - thanks to, because of (Они победили благодаря мне - They won thanks to me)

в силу(formal) - because of (В силу того, что у него не было денег, он не интересовался недвижимостью - Because he had no money he was not interested in real estate)

ввиду(formal) - taking into account, because of (Ввиду его недееспособности он был отправлен домой - Because of his disabilities he was sent home)

вследствие(formal) - in consequence of, owing to, on account of, as a result of (Вследствие отсутствия улик он был отпушен на свободу - Because of lack of evidence he was let go)

из-за - because of (Я опоздал из-за тебя! - I was late because of you!)

от - from (Это лекарство от гриппа - This is a medicine from flu)

• Purpose-related:

в целях(Formal) - with a view, in an effort (В целях вашей безопасности просим вас пристегнуть ремни - In an effort to provide security for you we ask you to fasten your seatbelts)

с целью - for the purpose of (Он поедет в Пензу с целью встретиться с рабочими - He'll go to Penza to meet with the workers)

за - for (Я пришёл за тобой - I have come for you)

для - for (Я для тебя приготовил сюрприз - I've made a surprise for you)

по - by, through (Я это написал по ошибке - I wrote this by mistake)

• Object-related :

о (об, обо) - about (что он говорил о статье? - What did he say about the article?)

про - about ( Дед рассказывал про войну - Grandpa was telling about the war)

• Limitation, opposition:

без - without (Вы не выиграите без меня - You will not win without me)

кроме - except for, but (Все ушли купаться кроме меня - Everybody went swimming but me)

против - against (Вы голосовали против Ельцина? - Did you vote against Yeltsin? )

вопреки - regardless of; notwithstanding; in spite of, despite (Я вернулся вопреки слухам- I came back despite all gossip)

вместо - instead of (Купи красный мяч вместо зелёного - Buy a red ball instead of a green one)

• Comparative:

наподобие - like, resembling (У вас есть что-то наподобие этой игрушки? - Do you have something like this toy?)

вроде - like, resembling (У вас есть что-то вроде этого? - Do you have something like this?)
